It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Nathan Pigg of Mount Vernon, Illinois, a devoted public servant, coach, mentor, and community leader whose loss will be felt profoundly across Jefferson County and beyond. Nathan’s passing marks the loss of a man who dedicated his life to service—whether through his work, his leadership, or his unwavering commitment to young people and animals alike.
Nathan proudly served the community in multiple roles throughout his life. He was a former Jefferson County Animal Warden, a position that reflected his compassion, responsibility, and care for those who could not speak for themselves. His dedication to protecting animals and serving the public left a meaningful and lasting impact. He also served as a City of Mount Vernon Building Inspector, contributing his time and expertise to ensure the safety and well-being of the community he called home.
Beyond his professional roles, Nathan was deeply involved in education and youth development. A graduate of Mount Vernon Township High School and Rend Lake College, he never forgot the importance of giving back. He was a respected board member and basketball coach within the Bethel family, where he made a powerful difference in the lives of students and athletes. Nathan was more than a coach—he was a mentor, role model, and steady presence for his players. His guidance, encouragement, and belief in them extended far beyond the court.
Nathan’s passing will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on his students, players, colleagues, and the wider school community. He believed in young people, invested in their growth, and helped shape their confidence and character. In recognition of the deep grief felt by students, grief counselors have been made available to support those struggling with this loss—a testament to how deeply Nathan was valued and how meaningful his presence was.
