It is with deep sadness that we mourn the passing of Peter Hubley of Halifax, Nova Scotia, a gifted musician, cherished friend, and truly unique soul whose music and spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Peter’s loss is felt deeply by his family, friends, bandmates, and the wider music community who admired both his talent and his heart.
Peter was more than a musician—he was a creator, a storyteller, and a collaborator whose passion for music shone through every note he played and every lyric he wrote. Those closest to him knew him as a super-talented bandmate, an adopted brother, and an all-around cool, interesting person whose presence made life richer and more meaningful. To play music alongside Peter was not just to perform, but to share in something genuine and deeply felt.
His songwriting stood out for its honesty and soul. One song in particular, from the Peace of the Sky Avacost CD—originally known as “The Celtic Song” or “The Celtic Tune”—holds a special place in the hearts of those who played it with him. Peter wrote most, if not all, of the music and lyrics himself, and it became a favorite not only for its melody, but for the emotion woven into it. Lines such as “we could build us a future, we could live” reflect Peter’s hopeful, reflective nature and his ability to express something timeless and human through music.
Peter’s friends remember how much joy he took in creating, sharing, and performing music. He was someone who inspired others simply by being himself—thoughtful, creative, and deeply connected to his art. He had a way of bringing people together through sound and conversation, leaving behind memories that will continue to resonate long after the music fades.
As we remember Peter, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him. May you find comfort in the legacy he leaves behind—in the songs he wrote, the music he shared, and the connections he forged.
Rest in peace, Peter Hubley. Your music lives on, your words still echo, and you will be dearly missed by those who were lucky enough to call you friend.
